Orthomed and Osso bring virtual reality surgery training to the animal health market
Orthomed, a company that offers veterinary equipment and training, has partnered with Osso VR to bring a VR surgical training platform to the animal health market.
The Osso VR platform has so far gained momentum in some areas of medicine, and this new partnership aims to expand the approach and services for veterinary education. Orthomed says the technology will provide veterinarians with "access to virtual reality training to gain muscle memory to improve performance, knowledge and confidence in various procedures" and allow them to practice procedures in virtual reality to increase the positive outcomes of real life surgeries.
The first module will focus on canine cruciate ligament repair surgery, a common procedure that repairs canine knee muscle tears and allows them to regain mobility.
Last week, UploadVR spoke with Osso VR founder and CEO Dr. Justin Barad about the company's path and the $66 million raised in a recent funding round. Osso VR currently has 160 full-time employees, but is expected to reach around 300 by the end of the year and 600-800 in two years.
“Our mission is to improve outcomes, expand the adoption of more valuable technologies and techniques, and democratize access to surgical education for everyone, everywhere,” said Dr. Barad. “And so my vision for Osso VR, however long it takes, five to ten years, is that every procedure you can do will be simulated on this versatile simulation platform called Osso. And that it is also the central repository for all healthcare qualification data.”
