Resident Evil 4 Remake: Release Date, Leaks and Everything We Know So Far

A Resident Evil 4 remake seems increasingly likely, but what exactly do we know about Capcom's plans? Here is everything we managed to extract from the network.

Resident Evil 4 is one of the most famous games in the Resident Evil series. Not only was it a lifeline for the aging franchise, it also revolutionized third-person shooters. There is a reason why it has been ported to almost every platform since its release. In fact, the game is so famous that some fans argue that a remake is not needed at all.

When playing on modern systems, Resident Evil 4 holds up well. The argument that a remake is unnecessary and that Capcom should look to Code Veronica or Dino Crisis instead has some weight. But if Resident Evil 4 is so popular and makes so much money for Capcom, why don't they remake it?

Will Capcom be making a Resident Evil 4 remake?

Seems likely. The remake of Resident Evil 4 will give Capcom the license to continue releasing the game on systems for years to come. In terms of the success of the original, that's exactly what they plan to do.

Now that the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes are in the rearview mirror, Capcom's remake team is about to embark on a new project. The remakes of the first three RE games (despite some quibbles regarding Resident Evil 3) were largely successful, both critically and commercially. So it's likely that some financially minded people at Capcom will be gleefully rubbing their hands at the prospect of a Resident Evil 4 remake.

The most recent entry Resident evil village , was in many ways a love letter to Resident Evil 4. It borrowed as much from 4 as it did from 7. So it's clear that the game is still in the collective consciousness of Capcom - and many of those who rushed to buy the Village.

Resident Evil Village has also upped the ante compared to its predecessor when it comes to action. However, it did so without losing its identity as a horror game. It was a tightrope that Resident Evil 4 also successfully navigated before RE 5 and 6 plunged into full-blown action.

If we use the series' history and current trajectory as indicators, then a Resident Evil 4 remake seems inevitable.

Resident Evil 4 Remake Evidence

Capcom hasn't officially confirmed a Resident Evil 4 remake. However, since the release of Resident Evil 3 in 2020, small bits of information have allowed fans to justify its existence.

A remake of Resident Evil 4 has been in development since 2018, according to DuskGolem, who regularly gets into Resident Evil fame. DuskGolem is usually right when it comes to Resident Evil, so it's easy to see why many fans take him at his word.

DuskGolem suggests that Resident Evil 4 will be different from the original and will take place in a "semi-open world". He also said that the merchant and the chainsaw-wielding enemy would have an expanded role. Resident Evil Village players will remember Duke referencing his Resident Evil 4 counterpart. Could this be more than just fan service?

It's also likely that the Chainsaw or Doctor Salvador in official art could take on a larger role as a stalker. It would be a great and intimidating way to reuse the character and make him more like Mr. X, Nemesis and Lady Dimitrescu . A full breakdown of these leaks can be found at Reddit is here.

Assets relating to the Resident Evil 4 remake were leaked online last year during Capcom's infamous hack. Some of them included images of the village from the very beginning of the game. However, they appear to have been removed after they were lashed out by Capcom. This is understandable since the images were obtained through criminal means, but it is still evidence of the existence of the game.

Capcom starts teasing Resident Evil 4 remake

Resident Evil 4 players will be very familiar with this symbol.

Capcom themselves seem to have acknowledged that the Resident Evil 4 remake cat is out of whack. Earlier this summer, the official Resident Evil Twitter page posted a "4" followed by "Itches. Yummy." Longtime fans will recognize this as the final line from the Guardian Diary in RE1, in which the character describes his own mutation from the T-virus.

This line has become legendary among fans, but why did Capcom decide to release it now? Can the number 4 at the beginning tease the future? Many fans are convinced this is due to Capcom's history of making cryptic teases of future projects online.

The most recent teaser appeared during the PlayStation Showcase. It's a moment and you miss it, but during the opening video (at the 1,46 mark) a group of soldiers exit the elevator, only to see a familiar image to the right (shown above).

The image is the symbol of Las Plagas from Resident Evil 4 and was probably added intentionally by Sony. The question is, is this just a nonsensical allusion to the game, or a cryptic allusion to things to come?
