Last year Resident evil village brought another stellar entry in Capcom's long-running survival horror series. The new DLC story and additional content coming later in 2022 seems to point to the end of the road to the title. As such, fans are now looking forward to the next entry in the franchise, which will be Resident Evil 9.
New leaks have surfaced that paint an interesting picture regarding the potential project. The information provided in the Reddit post attached above comes from the 4chan online forum, so it's possible the details could be fake. However, here's what the information says about the supposed next release.
Resident Evil 9 will be called Apcalypse
In line with last year's installment, this new entry will also not be numbered. I think it's called Resident Evil Apocalypse. If this is true, it would be interesting to see how the team writes the number 9 in the name of the Apocalypse, as they did with the first three letters Villages writing the Roman number VIII (8).
Other details highlight the "ghost town in the West", which may be surrounded by dense forests. The narrative seems to be centered around some kind of investigation, as well as what is called the 9th phase of the moon. The main gameplay environments will contain environments related to caves and rivers. Enemies have always been a highlight of the series, and a new type is proposed for this entry.
Seemingly inspired by mythological creatures, these enemies are likely to be horned and deformed, "with an emphasis on body horror", and will be labeled "Wendigo" and "Goat Man" according to in-game lore.
They also appear to be able to transform into friendly NPCs they have killed, suggesting a fairly dynamic AI in the game. Sound is also critical to a good horror experience and can be used masterfully, with elements that keep players on edge, such as the sound of footsteps.
The antagonist will be a woman named Gleistig is, interestingly, a term for an evil female spirit from Scottish folklore. However, not all monsters will be bad. New female NPC named Halder will provide moments of respite due to its bioweapon status, thus keeping the dangers that lurk at arm's length.
On this note hulder is another female mythological creature, this time from Scandinavian folklore. barghest is also described as one of the bosses and would be portrayed as a large black dog with a "twist".
The only gameplay aspect was the ability to block and barricade, as well as the return of breakable melee weapons.
Resident Evil 9 content for the next entry is rumored to be inspired by the horror stories and legends one would hear while in the countryside. If the leaked information is fake, someone definitely had a lot of fun reading folklore to come up with these ideas.
Interestingly, no clue about a potential protagonist has been offered. Is this a returning character or a brand new character like Ethan Winters from Resident Evil 7? How true, if any, is this leak? Only time will tell.
