Riot Games Removes Promotion Series Between Divisions League of Legends

Riot Games has announced that League of Legends will be officially removing its iconic cross-industry promotions across all competitive LoL ranked queues starting with Season 11.

Players will no longer need to play a three-game streak to advance to the next division of their ranked tier, Riot developer Cody "Codebear" Germaine confirmed in a post on season 11 blog published by 17 September.

“Promo games between divisions were originally implemented so that players could solve problems between LoL levels,” Germain said.

“[However] at best they were a source of relief and at worst they were a source of serious disappointment when you were eliminated for the fifth time in a row.

“We wanted to revisit this decision and get rid of unnecessary frustration and block buildup between sections of the queue. As such, at the start of preseason, we will be removing a series of promotions between divisions in both lineups."

After moving from one division to another, Riot will give you all the remaining LP to continue climbing. There will also no longer be cross-division demotion protection, which previously gave players on a losing streak a three-game buffer before being relegated to the division below.

Planned Ranked Series changes will not apply to promotional streaks between tiers, such as upgrades from Silver to Gold. These major ranking moves will still require League of Legends players to win a five-game streak to advance to the next level.

“We continue to believe cross-tier promotions are an important part of maintaining a meaningful and challenging transition between tiers,” Germain explained.

The developers have confirmed that in Season 11, the internal MMR League will fall under the Riot microscope. The main goals for 2021 will be "matchmaking quality" and "ranking transparency" to bring more balance to the solo queue.

Finally, the in the Riot Season 11 Ranked Update targeting the smurfs .

“We are testing a Matchmaking update that takes into account player rating and MMR in some selected regions,” said Mark Yetter. "It has a lot of advantages, including grouping smurfs, which some of you have already noticed."
