Sam & Max: This Time It's Virtual: Release Date June 2021
Sam & Max is gearing up to take the big leap into VR this summer with their first original game in over a decade. Developer HappyGiant and publisher Big Sugar have announced that the adventure game will be coming to Oculus Quest this June.
Launching on Quest, Sam & Max: This Time It's Virtual is also slated for later this year on SteamVR headsets via Steam and Viveport Infinity. The PSVR version should arrive in early 2022.
The studios have also released a new gameplay trailer, featuring some of the dynamic duo's proprietary deadpan one-liners, as well as unique puzzles and a bit of the game's character-focused story.
Here's how Happy Giant describes the upcoming Sam & Max VR adventure:
The dog in the hat is Sam. The naked jumping rabbit is Max. They are freelance police and they need your help in their 20th official video game: Sam & Max: This Time It's Virtual! Through the unholy science of virtual reality, players will finally experience the upside down world of Sam & Max as they join the die-hard transmedia darlings preparing the next generation of freelance cops to inoculate reality against the evil plague that infects it. Also, there will be some giant monsters.
Sam and Max first broke into the video game scene when LucasArts released the point-and-click adventure game Sam & Max Hit the Road in 1993 for DOS. The VR game development team includes several team members who worked on the original Sam & Max: Hit the Road by LucasArts as well as the Telltale series. Steve Purcell, creator of Sam & Max, consults on game design, art and history.
