Netflix reportedly will start charging for password sharing in 2023

Shared Netflix accounts may be a thing of the past

Netflix will crack down on password sharing in the US soon, according to a new report. The change comes after a difficult year for the platform and the introduction of an ad-supported plan (which still doesn't work as well).

According to Wall Street Journal (opens in a new tab), starting in 2023, Netflix will no longer allow you to share your US account for free. Instead, the streamer indicated that you would have to pay if your streaming agreements included the use of a password from family or friends. Netflix claims that more than 100 million streamers access the service with borrowed passwords.

The strategy has yet to be confirmed, but according to the report, Netflix is considering ideas similar to the US for a test rolled out in some Latin American countries: Netflix allows users to share their account with up to two people who do not live in their household and sends a hint to the borrower with verification code. The code is delivered to the account owner and has a time limit of 15 minutes. WSJ sources indicate that while the borrower can watch Netflix after entering the code, prompts may be displayed until the primary account holder pays extra to include someone who shares the account.

However, there is a stumbling block as it is not easy for a streamer to figure out if people are sharing passwords or if the account holder is going on vacation or even has a second home. Netflix is considering letting subscribers notify Netflix when they're about to be somewhere else, according to the report. The streamer said it will use device IDs, IP addresses, and account activities to ensure that account sharing only occurs within a single household.

So while the streamer hasn't yet decided on a solid strategy to put an end to password sharing, it looks like it's about to get a lot harder to borrow an account to watch the best Netflix shows and the best Netflix movies - and that could eventually become a thing of the past entirely.
