As you travel through the world of Torchlight 3, you will no doubt come across consumables that can be used to enchant your items! However, items that can be enchanted must have enchantment slots for this process to take place. If there are no available slots for an item, then, unfortunately, it cannot be enchanted. However, this process has changed a lot since the release of Early Access, and you can no longer get the Enchantment Table at the start of the game. Enchanting Table Unlock
To start enchanting items, you will need an enchanting table and an altar for your fort; however, this table can no longer be obtained until there is enough End Game. According to the developer on the Steam discussion forums:
Enchanting table and recipe are now end-game mechanics. You will unlock enchanting and the recipes will drop at level 47.
The quest to start your enchanting journey is now locked behind the game's story mode. Once the story mode is complete, after talking to the NPCs, they will begin to explain enchanting to you and also provide you with an enchanting table to place in your fort.
This causes some controversy, as materials and recipes can drop during playthrough before enchanting is available, which is very confusing for people who played early access and then played the full version. Or even first-time players to get items this early for something called End Game is annoying at best. Discussions on the Steam forums are flooded with questions about all of this.
How to enchant items
There is no exact science behind enchanting, you will get a specific recipe and what happens is more or less random.
Some recipes have a limited amount of random things from the table that can happen. If you have one enchantment slot and use the Shock and Awe recipe, for example, the following things can happen:
- electrical damage
- Shock Chance
- Shock duration
- impact bolts
- Stun Chance
- blind chance
- Blind duration
Any of them can be applied to your only slot!
The beauty of the table is that you can also disenchant items you don't use or need materials to enchant other things you use. You have to disenchant many items to get the resources you need, and the better the item you want to enchant, the more materials you will need. For example, you cannot use a normal essence to enchant a legendary item - you need to use a legendary essence to enchant a legendary item.
