Total War Saga: Troy - guide Achilles of Phthia

Achilles has two unique mechanics: Hot Achilles (mood bar) and son of Peleus. The first represents his erratic and at times violent mood swings. The latter, meanwhile, will remind you of Lu Bu's "greatest warriors" count in Total War: Three Kingdoms - A World Betrayed . Both of these features will be an essential part of your campaign. Total War Saga: Troy.

В Total War Saga: Troy you will witness the unstable, capricious and temperamental nature of Achilles. "Proud" Achilles at first, as cool and calm as Brad Pitt in " Inglorious Bastards" , will not have any pluses or minuses.

What's more, the game even states that he "leads his armies with reason". Then, due to various events, epic missions or events throughout your campaign, you will see major changes that will affect your playthrough for good or bad.

Total War Saga Troy

Your actions and various events during the campaign Total War Saga: Troy will have a gradual effect until the specific mood reaches 100%. However, events and epic missions often result in a 100% instant mood change.

Note: sometimes you are offered to give gifts to Achilles to calm his emotions. This will reset his mood to "Indignant" status.

Mood Scale

Consists of three emotions: indignation, grief and indignation. All three give their positive and negative effects. The least useful emotion is grief. Indignation will be useful at the start of the campaign, and indignation - in the middle and end. Despite the large bonus to the characteristics of the army, the indignation gives a negative population growth and -30% to resources. Therefore, you should be careful with this emotion.

Living legend

Achilles tries to prove that he is the greatest warrior the world has ever known. That's why he challenges other champions to test his strength. As mentioned earlier, this is similar to Lou Bu's mechanic from A World Betrayed with several key differences.

First, champions often come from a group of existing generals from other nearby factions. Similarly, you can challenge them directly through the Living Legend panel:

Total War Saga Troy

When the champion agrees to duel, Achilles must travel for three turns while another general must lead his army.

The champion can also automatically lose the challenge the moment you press this button. I'm guessing it might be due to the level mismatch.

If anyone refuses to duel, Achilles will need to defeat his army in combat.

There will always be three champions in each set, and once you defeat them all, Achilles will reduce unit upkeep and boost influence across the entire faction for 10 turns. After these moves pass, you will be told that people doubt Achilles' prowess and eventually a new pool of challengers will emerge.

Finally, defeating a set of champions allows Achilles to gain additional Myrmidon-type troops to recruit. They still have recruitment and upkeep costs, but you can immediately recruit them without waiting for a turn or having the necessary buildings.

Campaign Development when playing as Achilles

Walkthrough Total War Saga: Troy as Achilles will be confusing and difficult if you try to play him "normally". By this I mean that he should be "proud" so that there is no "for" or "against". Instead, you need to be more aggressive.

But before you do that, offer some NAPs and barter deals with playable Greek lords and some neighbors (like Agamemnon, Odysseus, Menelaus, Big Ajax, Little Ajax and Diomedes). Just try to avoid defensive or military alliances for now.

In addition to the Ellopians, during the first 15 turns you will most likely be attacked by the following underage Greeks: Abantes, Thessalians, Magnetes, and Minies. You can offer NAPs with Thessalians or Minies and they will hopefully turn you down.

On the other hand, if you are surrounded from all sides, how do you survive in the Tartarus hell? Well, simply: be indignant. Achilles' Resentment mood gives him incredibly broken buffs to aid in offense (pun).

You can do this quite early by defeating the Ellopians (just make sure you always fight the enemy every turn). One champion even refuses a duel challenge from Achilles, which gradually leads to anger.

Later in Total War Saga: Troy there are several epic missions that will instantly cause an Achilles surge if you choose the "outrageous" options. Examples include:

  • Destiny Predetermined - Accept Your Destiny
  • ➤News of War - Complete a request

If you ever make the decision to appease Achilles' wrath or let that anger consume him, always choose the dark side because these bonuses are worth it.

Note: while Achilles is outraged, there will be fewer resources and settlement growth will suffer as well. However, you can plunder enemy settlements from time to time to fund your conquests. If you make the right choice to keep the Greek factions happy, you can still offer plenty of barter deals to boost your income.

In a real battle, Achilles may be defeated, but he is not invulnerable. What you can do is head straight for the enemy general or other melee troops. Ranged units often don't waste their ammo if you're all alone, which means you can hit your targets with impunity.

the battle

My favorite is Achilles breaking through the gates of the settlement. At defensive towers have blind spots in front of the gates themselves. You can happily run and kick doors on your own.

Then climb the walls and kill all the soldiers there - they bunch up and the ranged units won't even mess with you. Later, just move the rest of your troops to clear them out.

Once you reach level 6, pick up the Divine Challenge skill (and later its "Armor" perk). This forces the enemy general into a pseudo duel that they cannot win against Achilles. Oh, and while this is happening, the other AI troops won't even try to shoot or stab you.

As for other perks, you should choose the ones that increase your melee damage, melee defense/armor, and HP regeneration. You should also grab a melee chariot and a reinforced chariot. This will allow Achilles to brutally control countless troops.

Achilles epic missions

As mentioned in the section of the manual on unique mechanics , you should be aware of Achilles' mood swings that are triggered by epic missions. These quests can make or break your playthrough. Total War Saga: Troy because of the additional effects that each decision entails.

Dark news of dreams Move Achilles to Iolkos (This is one of the regions north of your starting position. It is controlled by the Magnetes tribe.)

Predetermined fate - decision / event (Reject prophecy = Resentment
Accept your fate = Resentment
Lament your fate = Sorrow)

War news - decision / event (Provide Resources = Resentment
Reject request = Resentment
Ignore the demand = punishment for relations with the Greeks)

Rally of wolves - Have a total of 10
units of any of these types: Aegina Runners, Aegina Spears, Defenders of Phthia, Thessalian Foot Soldiers, Spear Fighting Myrmidons, Myrmidon Swordsmen, Pelagic Thessalians (The cheapest of these are Aegina Runners, as they don't need Bronze to maintain.
They are recruited through the Military Camp building (yellow). You must first have a level 3 settlement.
Completing this epic mission also spawns Patroclus as a normal slayer hero.).

Fall of Skyros Move Achilles to Skyros (Skyros Island is east of your starting position.)

Challenge Dryops - decision / event (Complete Dryops = XP and war with Lycomedes' Dolopians faction
Spare his life = Dolopians faction of the Lycomedes Confederation)

Recalcitrant Troy - Win three fights against any Pelasgian tribe/culture faction (These include Trojan factions, Dardania, two Ilions, Methymne, Ephria, Agriophones, Tereus, Aegean Pelasgians and Bottii.)

Diplomacy and economics

Diplomacy will not be easy for you, given the influence of emotions on Achilles. The faction is perfect for those who value battles in Total War above all else. Achilles can fight almost all of his neighbors. However, from the start there are few enemies among them, but with the rest you will have to establish diplomatic relations if you do not want to make a bunch of opponents.

Phthia's economy is weak. You will only have enough food and wood, but the rest will be tight. Gold, bronze and stone will need to be exchanged with the allies - Sparta, Mycenae and Ithaca. At the start of the campaign, take care of the buildings that produce food. Without this, it will be impossible to maintain an army.

Among the royal decrees, the first is to pump the branch of the granary, and then the treasury. Download the rest of the branches as needed for a particular resource and bonuses. The most useless branch for Achilles is the unnamed one.

Gods

Ares will be Achilles' primary deity throughout the campaign. The second most useful will be Apollo and Athena. Make sacrifices to these gods and keep an eye on their favor level. As for the rest of the deities, they should be worshiped as needed. Given the powerful infantry, Phthia will not need mythical units and a minotaur with a cyclops, which means Zeus and Poseidon will be the least important of all the gods. The only ones that can be useful are the centaurs, which will serve as a good help to the maneuverability of the army.

The Achilles faction has excellent foot soldiers and is one of the strongest in the Trojan War. The main problem of Phthia is a small amount of resources and negative bonuses from emotions. The ability to save money and conduct a competent war will lead this faction to rapid dominance throughout Greece. And remember: Three cannot be harmed by agents, and her garrison is the most powerful among all the fortresses.
