Twitch Stops Paying Russian Streamers Due to Sanctions
Russian Twitch streamers have said they have lost revenue from their broadcasts due to sanctions.
Russian companies, billionaires, athletes, and now influential people are feeling the consequences of growing problems between Russia and Ukraine.
Earlier in March 2022, Twitch streamer Mira stated that the Amazon-owned platform was "looking for a reason to ban her" due to her Russian heritage. Just a few days later, Russian streamers say they can't get paid because of the sanctions.
As it became known earlier, content creators from Russia began to receive emails confirming that the payment to their accounts was blocked.
"Payouts to the financial institution associated with your Twitch account have been blocked as a result of sanctions," the email reads. “Twitch is in compliance with economic sanctions imposed by the US and other governments and is in compliance with sanctions imposed in connection with the situation in Ukraine.
"These sanctions may limit or affect your access to payouts, your ability to monetize your broadcast, and/or provide financial support to other creators."
The email further added that "we will do our best to pay you back the income you have earned as soon as we are allowed to do so."
“I was blocked from paying with Twitch, many advertisers left the Russian market, and my Visa and Mastercard cards will soon be blocked abroad,” said Alexei 'Jesus AVGN' Gubanov, who moved from Russia to the US.
It's unclear exactly what will happen in the future, but an email from Twitch added that "we understand how frustrating and difficult this is and would like to assure you that if you are unable to provide an alternative financial institution, we will do our best." to pay you the income you have earned as soon as we are allowed to do so."
