An In-Depth Guide to Elemental Reactions in Genshin Impact

This is an extended guide to the elemental reactions of Genshin Impact, focusing on the correct use and effectiveness of the available combinations.

What are reactions, how do they work, and what are they for?

In general, reactions buff your entire squad, either by strengthening characters, or by additional damage, or by weakening enemies. For convenience, three types of reactions have been distinguished: reactions XNUMXst order, reactions II order and reactions III order.

Despite the fact that the reactions themselves strengthen your squad, they can also be strengthened. This is helped by such a feature as mastery of the elements.

Depending on the amount of mastery of the elements, the effectiveness of reactions increases. Next, we'll explain how mastery works in different reactions.

However, in addition to what is written in the game, reactions have nuances that not everyone knows about. For example, have you noticed how, after some reactions, the status remained on the enemy, which blinked, and with others, both statuses disappeared? This is due to the phenomenon status power. Here's an example for you:

We see how after the overload reaction remains pyro status. The thing is, this game has “strong" and "the weak" statuses. In this example, the pyro status was initially applied by Bennet with the help of his elemental skill (he imposes a strong pyro status), then Lisa imposes a weak electro status with one click on the elemental skill. After the reaction, the pyro status remains.

The table below describes some examples of status powers that a character inflicts with an elemental skill, an elemental blast, or a normal/charged attack (if he can do that). Everything was self-tested with reactions (in the same way as Bennett and Lisa's status power).

To find out the strength of the character's status yourself, you need to use these plates with the interactions of elements (all this was tested experimentally).

Here's another example of a reaction mechanic that isn't mentioned in the game:

Why does the damage differ twice, although everything is done the same way? The most attentive noticed the inscription “par” twice in the second video. But now the question arises “Why is this inscription only once in the first video?”. This mechanic is called“status overlay CD”.

In the first video, the vapor reaction appears after using Mona's elemental explosion. In the second video, the steam reaction appears twice: after Mona's elemental explosion and after Bennett's elemental skill. The thing is, Mona's Shadow Bubble can't put hydro status down again that quickly. But when he waits a little, he can put a hydro status and make a reaction. That's what it is “status overlay CD”. As with status powers, characters have different cooldowns for inflicting statuses with elemental skills, elemental blasts, and normal/charged attacks. You can check this yourself by looking at how many seconds the character can make the reaction again.

Now, after introducing a few concepts that we will need further, let's move on to each reaction separately.

Reactions of the first order

First order reactions are steam и melting. You can often hear these reactions referred to as "vape" and "melt" respectively. They are classified as Tier I, since these reactions themselves do not cause damage, but they greatly increase the damage of the attack that made this reaction.

Reaction Melting:

Reaction Melting occurs on contact pyro and cryo.

If the reaction was pyro attack, then the damage of this attack is doubled if the character has 0 elemental mastery. It's called "Direct Melt" or "Direct Melt"

If the reaction was cryo attack, then the damage of this attack is increased by one and a half times if the character has 0 elemental mastery. This is called “reverse melt” or “reverse melt”.

Reaction steam:

Reaction steam occurs on contact pyro и hydro.

If the reaction was hydro attack, then the damage of this attack is doubled if the character has 0 elemental mastery. It's called "Direct Vapor" or "Direct Vape"

 

If the reaction was pyro attack, then the damage of this attack is increased by one and a half times if the character has 0 elemental mastery. This is called “Reverse Vapor” or “Reverse Vape”.

How does mastery work in first-order reactions?

In order to understand how mastery works, one has to look at the complex damage formula in Genshin Impact. It looks like this: theoretical damage × enemy defense multiplier × enemy resistance multiplier × reaction multiplier. We are interested in the last part reaction multiplier. To find it, you need to multiply the base increase in damage from the reaction (1,5 or 2) by 1 + the percentage received from mastery of the elements in hundredths. For example, if a bennet with 58 skill hits cryo status, then the reaction multiplier will be: 2 × (1 + 0,111) = 2,222. Let's look at the value of this multiplier depending on the mastery of the elements.

The more skill, the lower this multiplier. This suggests that for characters who do first-order reactions in your team, it is not worth downloading only mastery. The most optimal value is from 30 to 150. It is relatively easy to get and it will give the most increase to the multiplier.

Similarly for reverse reactions of the first order. The optimal amount of mastery is from 30 to 150.

If you are interested in knowing what damage bonus on first-order reactions will give you a certain amount of mastery, you can use the formula. 278 × MS / (1400 + MS), where MS is mastery of the elements.

Features of first order reactions:

    1. This reaction increases the damage as a multiplier, which means that the damage with a critical hit can be increased by these reactions

    2. In reaction melting pyro always considered stronger. That is, regardless of the strength cryo status, if pyro closes the reaction, both statuses are removed. If the reaction closes cryo, then in almost all cases there will be a residual pyro status. An exception - сильный cryo + weak pyro. In such a situation, both statuses disappear immediately after the reaction.

    Similarly with the residual statuses for the reaction of couples. Hydro is always considered stronger. If the hydro closes the reaction, both statuses are always removed, if the pyro closes, the hydro status almost always remains. An exception - сильный pyro + weak hydro

What does it affect?

In the first half, it is clearly seen that the pyro status is hanging on the cryo fern all the time and Hu Tao does not make any reactions. The melting reaction is done by Gan Yu. This is due to the fact that Hu Tao has almost no cooldown from a normal attack, but the cooldown for applying a cryo status with Gan Yu's ult is about 2,5 seconds. So this is what happens in the video: first, Gan Yu imposes a cryo status. Hu Tao reacts with the first hit and cancels the cryo status. Then she makes a charged attack and a pyro status appears on the cryo fern. Gan Yu's ult inflicts a weak cryo status, and Hu Tao inflicts a weak pyro status with his attack. Weak pyro + weak cryo = residual pyro. Gan Yu does not have time to re-apply the cryo status on the enemy, so that Hu Tao always deals damage with the melting reaction. A similar situation will be with Dilyuk, Kli, Xiang Ling and Bennett with the sixth constellation. 

In the second half, before Hu Tao's charged attack, hydro status can be seen on the cryo fern. So she makes the reaction steam. Of course, this reaction is weaker than melting, but it is much easier to create. Moreover, Hu Tao will not be able to completely remove the hydro status from Xing Qiu immediately, because the pyro is considered weaker than the hydro. Therefore, she will have time to hit with the reaction of steam several times.

A few more ways to increase the efficiency of first-order reactions:

    1. To compensate for the low elemental mastery and increase the damage bonus for the reactions of pairs and melting, you can take the following characters in the squad

2. - Also, the instructor kit that your support character will wear can help with this. However, in a squad where it will be impossible to make a reaction, this set will be absolutely useless.

    - The Burning Scarlet Witch Set will also increase first-order reactions. However, this set is worth wearing. only pyro characters, because the bonus from two items gives 15% pyro damage. it is only useful to characters that can deal this pyro damage.

Second order reactions

The second order reactions are overload, superconductor, charged и broken. They are classified as Tier II, since the damage of these reactions depends on the level of the character who completed the reaction and his mastery of the elements. Does not depend on the element that completed the reaction.

Reaction overload

The overload reaction occurs when pyro and electro come into contact. An explosion occurs, dealing pyro explosion damage in an area (can break geo structures).

A charged reaction occurs when electro and hydro come into contact. Spawns chain lightning dealing electro damage Can deal damage 2 to 3 times to 3 targets.

Reaction superconductor 

The superconductor reaction occurs when electro and cryo come into contact. Deals cryo damage in an area (can deal damage up to two times to one enemy) and reduces the enemy's physical resistance by 40% for 14 seconds.

Reaction broken

The shattered reaction occurs when hitting with a two-handed sword, falling attack, hitting geo damage or an explosion (for example, with Klee's first combat talent) on a frozen enemy. Deals physical damage.

How Elemental Mastery Works in Tier XNUMX Reactions 

Tier 1 Reaction Mastery increases reaction damage. To find out the final damage of the reaction, taking into account the mastery, you need to multiply the value of the reaction damage by 90 + how many% the mastery of the elements gives in hundredths. For example, if a level 58 Bei Dou with 2406 Elemental Mastery makes an overload reaction, she will deal 1 * (0,266 + 3046) = XNUMX, ignoring enemy resistances. 

Let's look at the increase in the damage of reactions of the second order of a level 90 character, depending on the mastery of the elements.

Here, as well as with elemental mastery in first-order reactions, the greater the mastery, the smaller the increase (from 0 to 100 elemental mastery, the overload reaction increased by 1000 damage, and from 400 to 500 by 500 damage), so we can select the optimal value. It is relatively easy to obtain without sacrificing other parameters. In Tier II reactions, the optimal value is between 30 and 200 Elemental Mastery.

If you are interested in knowing what damage bonus on Tier II reactions will give you a certain amount of Elemental Mastery, you can use the formula. 667 × MS / (1400 + MS), where MS is mastery of the elements.

Features of the second order reaction 

1. Since these reactions deal damage on their own, they are independent of crit. character hits. These reactions cannot deal critical damage.

Since the damage of reactions of the II order depends on the resistance of the enemy (because we deal damage with a certain element), by lowering the resistance of the enemy to the desired element, we can strengthen the reactions

2. The damage of these reactions ignores the defense of the opponents, which means that the defense multiplier is not applied to them when calculating the damage. They will always deal a fixed amount of damage and do not depend on the level of the enemy.

More Ways to Strengthen Second-Order Reactions

1. To enhance reactions with elemental mastery, you can use all the same characters. Sucrose, Albedo, Dione and Instructor's kit.

2. The Loud Roar of Fury kit enhances electro reactions and is worth wearing for electro characters. After all, the bonus from two items gives 15% electro damage. It is only useful for characters that can deal this electro damage.

(An important nuance about this set. If the character is not on the battlefield, then calling these reactions does not reduce the cooldown (for example, Oz or Bay Doe chain lightning))
