Attention! New Virus Masquerading as Windows 11 Installer
Cybersecurity giant Kaspersky is warning people against downloading Windows 11 from unverified sources as the installer is likely to contain malware.
In a recent blog post, Kaspersky clarified that cybercriminals are defrauding users by inserting additional programs with a Windows 11 update or by publishing malware with a file name that looks like an update. He gave an example of an executable named 86307_windows 11 build 21996.1 x64 + activator.exe.
The 1,75 GB file looks legit. But most of this space consists of a large DLL, which contains a lot of "garbage".
Starting an executable file (.exe) launches a setup program that looks like a normal Windows setup wizard. Its main purpose is to download and run another installer. The second executable is also an installer that even has a license agreement labeled "download manager for 86307_windows 11 build 21996.1 x64 + activator". It mentions that he will install some kind of sponsored software. According to Kaspersky, if you accept the agreement, a lot of malware will be installed on your computer.
The company said it found several hundred such infection attempts related to a fake Windows 11 installer. Most of this malware consists of downloaders that basically download and run other programs.
Windows 11 is the first update to the popular operating system in six years. Microsoft has said it will end the Windows line after Windows 10, so it was a "welcome" surprise for PC fans.
The stable build of Windows 11 is still in development, but a preview build is available for those who need it. This includes software developers who need an OS to optimize their software and fix any bugs before the final build is released. Tech journalists also use the software to familiarize themselves with the changes that might come with the Windows 11 update. There are also enthusiasts who use this OS as a novelty and a new trend.
Microsoft has made it very easy for users to download this preview build for Windows. But some users prefer to visit other websites for their software. This can put some unwanted programs on their computer, ranging from annoying to dangerous.
To avoid such misadventures, users are advised to download Windows 11 only from official sources, as advised by Microsoft.
So far, Windows 11 is officially only available to members of the Windows Insider program, which requires registration. It is also necessary compatible device with Windows 10 installed.
