As part of the upcoming update Minecraft 1.20 Mojang released Armor Overlays, a personalization tool for your favorite armor set. Here's everything you need to know about them, including how to make them, what they do, and all the recipes you need.

Announced January 24, 2023, Armor Trim is quickly becoming a fan favorite with the ability to customize your armor. Armor finishing will change the look and color of your gear and allow you to match your own style and show off your travels, all from a simple blacksmithing table.

However, while this feature is already extremely popular, knowing what Armor Overlays do (Armor trims) and how to make your new set can be a bit confusing. With that in mind, we've compiled everything you need to know about the new feature in Minecraft 1.20 Snapshot, as well as recipes so you can look fantastic.

It's worth noting that this was recently announced and is currently only available to those who play Minecraft 1.20 Snapshot. If you are interested in trying 1.20 Snapshot then we have a guideвabout with a detailed description how to join and everything you can expect.

What is padding or armor trim in Minecraft 1.20

New armor sets will appear in the Minecraft 1.20 update.

Armor Trims are a way to visually customize your armor in an open world game. They allow you to change color and design with overlays, adding flair and showcasing the places you have traveled to.

Each has its own design and each ore adds a different color, providing full customization and a beautiful look every time.

How to make custom armor in Minecraft

To customize your armor, you will need to get hold of three things:

  1. Armor finishing
  2. Ore
  3. Piece of armor to customize

The armor itself can be crafted normally, while the trims (pads) must be found and are usually located in conspicuous places, although we have all the locations and recipes listed below. As for ores, the color of your armor set will depend on the ore you are using. There are a total of ten different possible ores, so there are ten possible colors. These include:

  • Hardware
  • Copper
  • Gold
  • Lapis
  • Emerald
  • Diamond
  • Netherite
  • Redstone
  • Amethyst
  • Quartz

Once you have the ore, armor, and armor piece, head to the blacksmith's table and combine the three ingredients. Then your personal armor will be made.
