There was a time when video games turned into movies were generally looked down upon by gamers, and many releases lacked the charm of what ultimately made these games so popular.
Fast forward to today, with shows like The Witcher doing well on Netflix and capturing audience attention, there are plenty of fantastic stories that gamers can look forward to watching at home or in the cinema.
As a result, studios like Netflix, Amazon, and even the vaunted Hollywood have started making more video game movies. Here's everything we know about the upcoming movies and video game-based shows coming up in the coming years.
Upcoming video game movies in 2022 and beyond
Mario - December 2022
Why didn't we have more Mario movies?
A film that is alone laid the foundation Chris Pratt meme. The Hollywood actor will voice the titular character alongside Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach. Despite the endless success of the Mario franchise, this is only the third Mario movie ever to be made, and the first since 1993.
Not too much is known about him outside of the cast, but the anticipation is undoubtedly sky high, and is currently set to premiere in December 2022, but that can always change.
Minecraft - to be confirmed
You must think that the Minecraft movie will be incredibly profitable.
Minecraft is Mojang's iconic franchise, so where's the movie? Originally scheduled for a 2022 release date, development is rumored to have stalled altogether, with Warner Bros. threw the film aside.
But suddenly it seems that Jason Momoa making his way to a shocking lead role in a potential Minecraft movie.

A company press release states: “A lot of effort has been put into creating Elden Ring so that we can exceed the expectations of our fans around the world. We will continue our efforts to expand the brand beyond the game itself and into everyone's daily lives." This has already spawned a discussion that Elden Ring may appear on the big screen at some point.
Tomb Raider 2 - TBA
Alicia Vikander made a great Lara Croft and it won't be a surprise to see her return to the role.
Even though the Tomb Raider reboot starring Alicia Vikander didn't do much at the box office, it had a lot of action to keep viewers on their toes - so much so that a sequel was predetermined.
However, the effects of the pandemic have heavily impacted the film's development and production, leaving this video game adaptation still right on the table for now.

If you're unfamiliar with the Borderlands video game universe, consider Mad Max crossed with the craziest things you can think of.
Setting a movie in the Borderlands universe makes a lot of sense, as movies like Tiny Tina's Wonderlands Review and Tales From The Borderlands 2 are full of characters and personalities that could keep us hooked for hours. So it's not surprising that Lionsgate announced in 2015 that they were developing an adaptation of it.
With a stellar cast including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Jamie Lee Curtis, among many others, the game world held its breath for the film's opening shots.
Bioshock - TBA
One of the new announcements on our list, combined stories from Bioshock's Rapture, Columbia, and the upcoming fourth game. After the five-year struggle to make the movie was effectively canceled in 2013, Netflix shocked gamers with the news that a full-length movie was coming to Netflix.
We'll have to wait and see if we go to Rapture or Columbia, but the initial tweet suggests the former is more realistic.
Metal Gear Solid - T.B.A.
Series creator Hideo Kojima first announced a Metal Gear Solid movie version back at E3 2006, but the movie has been stuck in development hell for a long time. The biggest sign of progress was on December 4, 2020, when we learned that beloved Hollywood actor Oscar Isaac had signed on to play Solid Snake.

Another video game movie project in limbo, Five Nights at Freddy's is a horror indie animatronics sensation that has reached an incredible level of popularity, resulting in a movie license. As with many game adaptations, the companies and staff involved have shrunk and changed, but the CEO of current distributor Bloomfield has confirmed that it is still a work in progress.
Call of Duty - TBA
A Call of Duty movie would make complete sense.
The biggest and most successful FPS franchise of all time, it makes sense that Call of Duty is in the process of being made into a movie. Like Mario, it's notable that we haven't seen the movie yet, but if rumors and reports are to be believed, it could be on the horizon.
Not only that, but none other than Hollywood's action protagonist Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson' is also linked to the film, either in the title role or in a co-producing role.
The Division-TBA
The Division franchise has gone quiet for a bit, but a Division movie is still on the horizon.
On the other hand, Division doesn't seem in need of a movie, especially with Tom Clancy's other bigger names. However, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain are in the lead roles and filming is now expected to begin this year.
Jak and Daxter - TBA
Like Bioshock, the revelation that Jake and Daxter will be washing their tuxedos for the imminent premiere is new information for 2022. Following the release of the highly anticipated Uncharted film, its director Ruben Fleischer confirmed that his next film will focus on the iconic duo.

The Last of Us - 2023
The heartbreaking tales of The Last of Us Part I and II are perfect for television. In an era of dark, brutal shows without boundaries, the story of Naughty Dog's Joel and Ellie is ready for a wider audience. Critically acclaimed games are brought to life on HBO, with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in the lead roles.
Its release failed and now it won't grace our screens until 2023.
The Witcher: Season 3 - TBA
The Witcher's debut on Netflix was highly anticipated, with millions of people tuning in for both seasons. Therefore, it is not surprising that The Witcher season 3 will continue the role of Henry Cavill Geralt of Rivia. There is so much lore and history of the franchise left unexplored that The Witcher could be around for a few more seasons.
The application for a new season is already underway, and while it's still unconfirmed at the moment, we wouldn't be surprised if Netflix can bring The Witcher season 3 to our screens before the end of 2023.
Assassin's Creed-TBA
While the video game movie for the iconic stealth franchise already released in 2016 starring Michael Fassbender, Netflix brings the Assassin's Creed franchise to the comfort of our homes. Details are tight, but it will be interesting to see who ends up in the top billing for this upcoming TV show.
Resident Evil - TBA
It looks like Netflix can't get enough of Resident Evil, as shortly after the recent release of Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, they're also releasing a Resident Evil series in 2022 to really delve into what makes the characters and locations so special.
Previous Resident Evil video game movies haven't had enough time to really get into the nooks and crannies of the main characters, while the episodic show is likely to be the perfect chance for newcomers to dive into the series' in-depth lore.
Splinter Cell - T.B.A.
Who would have thought we could get the video game series Splinter Cell before the 2013 sequel Splinter Cell: Blacklist? This is where we seem to be heading.
Netflix has brought in Derek Kolstad as its showrunner and writer-creator on John Wick, so we expect the bright, stylish episodes to adequately capture the essence of villain Sam Fisher.
Arcane: Season 2 - 2022
Arcane, a spin-off from the League of Legends universe, currently sits at a dazzling 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Every aspect of the series was highly acclaimed upon release, with fans feeling that the show's long wait was more than worth it.

Post-apocalyptic settings are always intriguing, and the premise of Fallout could flourish for Amazon as a video game television show.
Another Amazon venture out of the gaming space is the world-famous AAA franchise Fallout. Bethesda's post-apocalyptic property will benefit from the help of Todd Howard, director and executive producer of Bethesda. While other details are scarce, we do know that production starts in 2022.
