WarTales is a Mix of Strategy and RPG from the Creators of Northgard.
The creators of Northgard, Shiro Games Studio, presented their new products during the PC Gaming Show. WarTales is like Battle Brothers. The game will take us to the Middle Ages and allow you to lead a company of mercenaries.
If yesterday after the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase you went to watch the Holland-Ukraine match, you may have missed the PC Gaming Show and the announcement of WarTales, the new project of the talented studio Shiro Games. The creators of games like Northgard, Evoland and Darksburg have decided to move their new strategy to the Middle Ages and give us command of a company of mercenaries whose task will be to survive among the kingdoms devastated by the plague. Take a look at the featured trailer.
At first glance, WarTales resembles Battle Brothers. Both the themes and the scenery, and the combination of strategic and role-playing elements are reminiscent of the creation of Overhype Studios. However, in the title shown by Shiro Games, research should play a bit more of a role - like the aforementioned Northgard, we'll have to double and triple to provide the team with food and gold. Instead of defending ourselves against cold winters, we will have to fight the plague. There will also be more material opponents such as packs of wolves or gangs of thieves that we will have to face in turn-based battles.
More details about the fight in WarTales were given by game director Nicholas Kannas:
We wanted interesting battles between different troops that would take place in a variety of environments on large maps. We decided that players should have more freedom than the classic RPG duels from Baldur's Gate 3 or the Divinity series. So we started working on combining classic tactical strategy games with RPGs, emphasizing player decisions.
An example of style mixing created by Shiro Games can be seen in the collision mechanic. This will allow you to use special mercenary skills, previously randomly generated in the camp, to change opponents or exit the battle. The recruits will also have individual predispositions and will wield different types of weapons that we will use to defeat especially strong opponents, including some bosses that will have multiple turns per round.
If for some reason you are afraid that you will get a game with fantasy elements, the developers will definitely dispel your doubts. WarTales is meant to be "truly medieval": dark and violent. He will not cling to historical facts, but will only be wallpaper of medieval organizations and events, such as the Church or the Great Plague, and show them from a different angle. There will be no main plot for him. We'll just get an open world whose regions we can explore (with their own stories) in any order.
This does not mean that WarTales will be easy. On the contrary, the developers admitted that they had to remove some of the survival mechanics from the project because the game was getting too difficult and they kept dying while testing it. However, challenge lovers can look forward to a mode called "Iron Man" that offers only two checkpoints and the inability to save progress at any time.
WarTales is set to debut in Early Access on Steam later this year. The developers predict that this state of affairs will last from a year to a year and a half. At first we are going to get content for about 10 hours of fun (or death), but Shiro Games is aiming for much more. The game will soon be available for testing, as its demo will be available during the Steam Next festival, which will take place June 16-22.
